Old Schoolhouse
Certified as a New Jersey Historic Site
  • The Old Schoolhouse is a one-room building of typical South Jersey Flemish bond brickwork with dark headers and red stretchers.
  • Its simple interior is marked by a dramatic open hearth, authentic school furniture and period equipment.
  • It is the oldest schoolhouse in New Jersey on its original site.
  • In June 1759, twenty-one citizens of Mount Holly, or Bridgeton as the town was then named, subscribed for twenty-five shares to buy land and build a schoolhouse.
  • Instruction was provided for over 100 years.
  • John Woolman, the world-renowned Quaker preacher and abolitionist, taught at the Old Schoolhouse using his First Book For Children.
  • Today students can experience an exciting 18th century exploration through special school tours: Costumed docents will help you step into the 18th century as you don clothes of the era, experiment with period equipment, learn lessons and play games.
  • School visits may be arranged to include stops at the Mt. Holly Friends Meetinghouse and the Woolman Memorial.
  • Programs meet New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards.

The Old Schoolhouse is open to the public on Mt. Holly Days and by appointment. Group tours and school tours may be arranged by contacting NSCDA-NJ at 609.267.6996 or by emailing us.
